Woodbine Racetrack Development is one of the major development projects in Canada. It will include mixed use residential and commercial space, sports and recreational facilities, parks and public spaces, a new casino, hotels, restaurants and live entertainment venue. In Phase II of the project we were faced with a challenge where certain areas of the strip footings for the proposed building were to be constructed over existing live underground utilities that could not be relocated. The load from the strip footings could potentially damage the existing underground utilities. In partnership with Tara Engineering & Structural Consultants Inc. Aura-Con designed and drilled a series of structural caissons in required areas to transfer the load from the strip footings to the structural caissons. A total of 35 structural caissons ranging from 60” to 84” in diameter with an average depth of 50 ft were drilled and poured.
